No amendments please

It is preposterous for fellows like Canon Peter Karanja, Secretary General of the National Council of the Churches of Kenya and Pastor Oginde of Christ is the Answer Ministry to claim that the referendum was marred by irregularities. These two gentlemen have now left the pulpit altogether and become politicians. It is interesting that even seasoned politicians as the retired President Moi accepted the result of the referendum. Kenyans had spoken loud and clear; no wonder Karanja and Oginde are not being listened to.

On the morning of August 4th, I woke very early in the morning and went to vote. The main reason was that I believed that my vote could actually make a difference in this country.  More that 8 million others did the same.  Out of those over 6 million voted with me to approve the draft constitution. Why I’m voting YES come August 4th

My friend Hillary asked me what I stood to gain if the new constitution passes. Since he is a student of Law that question baffled me. I would have assumed that  he more than anybody else would be able to compare both constitutions and make a judgement on which benefits me more as a citizen.  So my answer was simple ‘ A lot. Read the draft‘. Then came the response, ‘ You know what! What Kenya needs is good leaders. Leaders who are reformists. Even with the best constitution in the world with the leaders we have, no gainwill b made! Did you know that Zimbabwe has a better constitution than many countries, yet citizens are under oppression? Leaders can chose to ignore constitutions.’

That response sent me straight here. I have had to answer similar question from yet another friend of mine and somehow I get surprised every time someone asks me this.

The House or the rat? What is your choice?

This is an interesting anecdote which I thought I might share regarding the constitutional review debate.

There once was a man who lived in a house which also had a rat in it. The man had for many days tried to capture the rat and to kill it but he had not been successful. Unfortunately for both him and the rat, his house caught fire one day. He sounded the alarm and the neighbours came to help him put out the fire. In the process, the rat ran out of the house and the man saw it. He told the people to stop putting out the fire and run after the rat (more…)

I don’t envy Uhuru Kenyatta’s place in Kenya’s politics today. The man is faced with the daunting task of managing our money at a time that is proving to be more critical than anyone would have ever imagined.

Recently, there was uproar about funds for civic education. The Committee of Experts was all over the media raising hell about the money they had asked for and did not get. Mr Uhuru was demonized for failing to give cash to such an important government organ. He kept to his word that all the money that was available had been allocated.  Pundits even started to interpret Uhuru’s move as one to suggest that he was not keen on us having a new constitution. As usual our dear Prime Minister rose to the occasion and saved the day.  Of course, nobody now cares that budgets of other ministries were cut without parliamentary approval to fund the ‘deficit’ at the Committee of Experts on Constitutional Review. Mutahi can really stretch his imagination

I know that if I had been at the University of Nairobi  earlier, Mutahi Ngunyi would have taught me. I wish I had been because that would have given me a better understanding of the man and his thoughts.  He definitely holds political opinions just like all of us but he has successfully managed to position himself as the political scientist of Kenya. Kudos for that Mutahi. Nevertheless, that doesn’t give you a licence to confuse Kenyans which is something you appear hell-bent on doing at least as far as the proposed constitution is concerned.

I can’t quite understand how you would argue that President Kibaki supports the proposed constitution because Chapter 9 favours the now defunct ‘KKK Alliance’. In case it is lost to you Mr Mutahi, Kibaki is not running for office again. You and I know very well, noting from some of your previous articles, Kibaki really doesn’t care about who succeeds him.

In fact, we also know that what is most important for the president now is whether we will remember as the guy who gave our children free education, built roads and gave us a prosperous  future through Vision 2030 which as he is very clear can’t be achieved without the new constitution.
